RESEARCH PROJECTS
International Law and Internet Governance (ILIG) Project
For more than two decades, AHALI lawyers have engaged with matters relating to the governance of the Internet, including by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). This engagement has included studying the history of Internet governance and dispute resolution in multiple international arbitrations (Independent Review Proceedings) against ICANN. The Internet is, by its very nature, a global resource, an information highway that connects the farthest corners of our planet and even beyond. This feature of the Internet is reflected in ICANN’s governance documents, which provide that “In performing its Mission, ICANN must operate in a manner consistent with these Bylaws for the benefit of the Internet community as a whole, carrying out its activities in conformity with relevant principles of international law and international conventions and applicable local law, through open and transparent processes that enable competition and open entry in Internet-related markets.” (ICANN Bylaws, Section 1.2(a))
The ILIG Project focuses on studying and developing the principles of international law that apply to Internet governance drawing from general principles of law, custom, investor-State jurisprudence and other disciplines.
